Before How, Why?
Our stuff says a lot about us. What we like. Where we’ve been, or want to go. They can say things about us we don’t want them to. In life and death, our possessions speak for us.
When someone you love dies, making decisions about what to keep, what to give away, what to throw away, what matters is an emotional albatross.
Some things you’ll use or display, others you’ll dispose of.
Some, random and mundane things, you will keep. Inexplicably paralyzed with indecision, unsure of how to let this thing go, while at the same time, having no personal love for it.
This project is an effort to create a record of our loved ones’ things—objects they touched, or made, or kept.
Sharing stories to provide comfort and preserve memories, maybe making it easier to let go of the physical (if you want), or just to share one of the things that helps keep the person you loved with you.
Whatever you’re moved to share, whoever you want to share about.
Thank you for sharing.
How to Share
Take a photo.
Take a photo, or photos, of the item.
It doesn’t need to be professional, just clear and in-focus. If you no longer have the item, upload any (PG) photo along with your story.
Tell the story.
What the item is, who it belonged to, when it was made, why your person kept it, why you’re keeping it, or conflicted about keeping it, anything you’re moved to share.
